Why do you have to license an image?
Licensing an image is like renting a car you pay to use it for a specific amount of time. And, like a renter’s agreement, we have what’s called a “licensing fee.” This is the amount you pay for the image, based upon how the image is used. Each image is a separate piece of art and therefore requires a separate licensing fee. Please note: Illustration Works will be happy to assist you with special orders, like discounts for multiple uses and exclusive uses for periods of time or specific industries. Just ask us!
After I pay, can I use it as much as I want?
Um... no. That would be stealing. An image is licensed for a specific number of uses for a certain amount of time. If you need to use your image time and again for an indefinite amount of time, you might want to consider purchasing a royalty-free image.
Can I alter the image?
You bet! Once you buy it, it’s yours. Zoom in, crop off, use it whatever way you see fit.
Should I give the artist credit?
Aw, gee - how nice. But it’s not necessary. No artist would complain, but it’s not required.
How is it priced?
If you’re familiar with buying stock photos, you’re familiar with our prices - they’re very competitive with the photo guys. Individual licensing fees are based on how the image will be used. Which means? Each case is different. Are you using the image for print, a brochure, or the Web? If it’s print, what’s the run? What’s the finished image size? Is it a regional or national distribution? All of these things determine the price of the licensing fee.

For example, editorial use of a 1/4-page image with a 10,000 circulation would cost approximately $200. That same usage with a circulation of 200,000 would cost about $400.

See how it works? Feel free to get a quote on any image in our collection by using the pricing calculator on our Image Order page, or call us at 206.201.2110.
What does royalty-free mean?
Unlike a licensed image, a royalty-free image can be used as often as you like after purchase. There is one exception to this - if you are creating retail products, you will need to arrange for a special license from us.

Royalty-free images usually cost less than licensed images. To see available sizes and prices, simply click on the "calculate price" button below each thumbnail.
Royalty-Free - pros and cons
Royalty-Free pieces of art are usually cheaper - and you can use them as many times are you like. Those are the pros. Wow - so what are the cons? They can show up, anywhere. Royalty-free images have fewer restrictions and tend to be in wide circulation. Which means? You could see the same piece of art on a bank brochure and selling ice cream. Depending on your project, this may not matter. But if you’re doing a brand or corporate campaign for a high-profile client, you may need something more unique - and a guarantee that the competitor can’t use the same image at the same time.
Why would I want a custom illustration?
Here, the question should be “why wouldn’t you want one?” In case you didn’t know, custom illustration is a great way for you to capture what’s in your head - and turn it into a piece of artwork. Not only can you get exactly the image you want - you can get it in the exact style you want. If you’ve searched but haven’t found precisely what you’re looking for, call us! We love a perfectionist. And our team of 200 premier illustrators is well versed in a huge array of mediums and styles - and would be thrilled to create a custom piece of art, just for you.
What’s the time frame?
It depends on the project, its complexity, and how many illustrations are needed. But usually it takes anywhere from one day to several weeks to receive your art. In a hurry? One or two custom images can usually be delivered in a day or two. Wow, huh?
What about usage?
You can pay for unlimited use, but it isn’t automatically included. Just like a piece of stock art, usage price is tailored to fit your needs. So what about the artist? Well, she/he will be able to show the image in their portfolio as a sample of their work, but the image will not be available to other stock buyers unless you want it to. You don’t? Then we’ll license it for "exclusive use." Until you decide to purchase the image, the artist retains all copyrights.
Is it expensive?
Usually not! Price, of course, varies depending on the artist’s style and experience, but sometimes, a custom illustration is as reasonably priced as stock usage.
How do I order?
It’s simple. Browse through the Web site to see what images you like, or call us! One conversation with our art-savvy team and you’ll be on your way to the perfect piece of art for your idea. Whether it’s woodcut or digital, whimsical or corporate, we’ll connect you with an artist to share your vision.

Quick search tips
Searching’s a cinch, as long as you keep a few rules in mind:

o Looking for a phrase? Put it in quotes. Like “rock and roll.”

o Use uppercase or lowercase - your choice.

o Searching for concepts (like freedom, joy and success) are good ways to find interesting images.

o If searching for more than one image number, please separate them with commas.

o Use natural language, like “boy with dog.”
Advanced search tips
You know you want a mixed media, pop-art image of a vintage car. What else do you need to know? Well, it helps to know whether you want rights-protected or royalty-free. Do you want square, vertical, or horizontal? Color or black and white? And which category? The more info you specify, the easier it is to find your image.
Narrowing the search
Now we’re getting somewhere. Want to narrow your search even more? Try these tips:

This is happening because your account has not yet been verified. When you signed up on the website, you should have received an email asking you to verify your account. This step is in place to help prevent fraudulent account registrations. We suggest you take a look at your email for the confirmation email we sent you and follow the instructions.

Until your account is verified, you will be unable to see unwatermarked images and will not be able to place orders online. Call us if you need additional help.
What’s a lightbox?
Ever see an image online and wish you could save it for later? If it’s an Illustration Works image, now you can - with lightboxes. Lightboxes are the online equivalent of a photo drawer - you know, that place you stash all of your favorite images until you have time to sort them out? With Lightboxes, you can do that online!

It’s simple. Whenever you see an image you like, click to add it to your lightbox. Then, when you’re ready to look at them, they’ll be right there. Each user gets up to five lightboxes, so you can have one for “dogs,” one for “Project 72” and another for “Favorites.” When you’re ready, name your lightboxes and categorize your images for easy viewing and sharing. You can even make notes on your images! What a treat.
